Peltola Dismisses Ballot Name Controversy in Tight Alaska Senate Race
“I’m looking out at this room of hundreds of people who are smart people and know exactly who they’re voting for,” Peltola told supporters during an election night speech.
She rejected allegations that her campaign had helped recruit Daniel J. Sullivan, a similarly named candidate, to mislead voters. The accusations had drawn criticism from US President Donald Trump.
Peltola had previously said she was unaware of other candidates in the race apart from herself and the incumbent. Addressing supporters at an earlier rally, she argued that voters would not be distracted by “shiny objects” or outside financial influence, including money provided by Elon Musk.
“We know distractions when we see it, and we are not falling for any of their funny business,” she said.
With ballot counting still in its early stages, Peltola also warned that determining the final outcome could take “weeks” because of Alaska’s remote communities and procedures for processing absentee ballots. She described the extended counting period as “Alaska normal.”
Under state election regulations, officials can receive ballots cast overseas for up to 15 days after Election Day. This provision means the Senate contest could remain unresolved while votes from remote areas continue to be processed.
Meanwhile, Sullivan urged his supporters to remain patient as the national election picture showed growing Democratic gains. In a post on X, he acknowledged the Democratic wave across the lower 48 states but maintained that Alaska's political situation was different.
“We are seeing high turnout and promising early returns. The night is young, stay tuned,” he said.
